The Honourable Member representing Orlu, Orsu, and Oru East Federal Constituency, Hon. High Chief Canice Moore Chukwugozie Nwachukwu (Omeogo, Ogbaturuenyi Na Orlu), recently hosted a strategic meeting with Imo State newspaper publishers association at the renowned Protea Hotel in Owerri, Imo State.
The gathering brought together key players in the Imo media space, providing an opportunity for dialogue and collaboration.
Omeogo warmly received the publishers, expressing his profound respect for their crucial role as the watchdogs of society. He praised their efforts in shaping public opinion and acknowledged the significant impact they have in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance.
In his address, the lawmaker highlighted the indispensable role of the media in nation-building, urging publishers to maintain objectivity and fairness in their reportage. He stressed that the media possesses an immense power to influence society either positively or negatively. According to him, their reportage can build bridges or create divisions, depending on the principles guiding their work.
Omeogo
did not shy away from addressing the current political climate in Imo State. He made a passionate appeal to the publishers to avoid using their platforms to attack or criticize the current administration led by Governor Hope Uzodimma.
He credited the governor as a central figure in his political journey, describing him as the reason for his successful election into the National Assembly.
In a metaphorical expression, Omeogo likened his relationship with Governor Uzodimma to that of a son and his mother. He explained that it is impossible to love the son while harboring animosity toward the mother, as the bond between them is inseparable. He implored the publishers to align their narratives in ways that promote unity and cooperation rather than division and conflict.
The lawmaker further reiterated the need for ethical journalism and encouraged the media professionals to champion developmental reporting that uplifts the state and supports good governance. He acknowledged that while criticism is an integral part of journalism, it should be constructive and aimed at fostering progress rather than tearing down existing structures.
Responding on behalf of the publishers, the Chairman of the Imo State Newspaper Publishers Association, Chief Declan Anele, expressed gratitude to Hon. Omeogo for his open-mindedness and continued support for the media. Chief Anele acknowledged the importance of the lawmaker's message and assured him of the association’s commitment to professionalism and ethical practices in their reportage.
The event was described as a productive engagement that underscored the critical role of dialogue in strengthening relationships between government officials and the media. It served as a reminder of the shared responsibility to work toward a common goal of societal growth and good governance.
Moderating the parley, Peter Dibia, an accomplished communication professional, informed the publishers of Hon. Omeogo’s academic background. He revealed that Omeogo is a proud alumnus of the Department of Mass Communication, Imo State University, Owerri, from the 2018 set. Dibia noted that Omeogo’s coursemates are immensely proud of him, particularly for his effective representation and the positive impact he has made on his constituents.
Dibia’s remarks provided further insight into the personality of the lawmaker, portraying him as a man who has remained connected to his academic roots and professional peers. He emphasized that Omeogo’s achievements are a testament to his commitment to excellence and service
