The Rosebon Empowerment Initiative (REIN) concluded the 2024 Ugo Obowo Football Tournament in grand style today, December 28, 2024. The event, themed "A Goal Against Poverty," brought joy and excitement to Obowo, Imo State, uniting the community around sports and empowerment.
The tournament, which began on October 27, 2024, at the Progressive Primary School field, Umuosuochie, Obowo, served as more than just a sports gathering. It was a platform to raise awareness about poverty and the transformative power of unity. The event also started with the distribution of palliatives to men, women, and youths, creating an atmosphere of inclusivity and support.
In her opening address, Hon. Chief (Mrs.) Chinwendu Edomobi Amba, President of REIN, emphasized the core purpose of the tournament: fostering camaraderie and mutual respect among the youth through sports. "This tournament is a celebration of unity, not a contest of rivalry," she remarked, encouraging participants to embrace love, peace, and togetherness. She also expressed deep gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event, describing it as a milestone in promoting social harmony.
According to Chief Amba, the Ugo Obowo Football Tournament symbolizes REIN’s commitment to fighting poverty through empowerment. She underscored how the initiative aligns with REIN's broader objectives of blending sports with social impact to drive positive change.
Commending the players and team leaders, Chief Amba praised their cooperation and exemplary conduct throughout the tournament.
The final match saw the victorious Umuosuochie team, the hometown of Ugo Obowo, defeat their opponents from Umuokeh with a narrow 1-0 win, lifting the tournament trophy amid cheers.
Prizes and Awards:
The winners received ₦400,000.
The second runners-up took home ₦200,000.
The third-place team was awarded ₦150,000.
Additional cash prizes of ₦10,000 and ₦20,000 were presented to the best player, best goalkeeper, most corporate team, and best team leader.
REIN’s impactful projects over the years, including educational programs, vocational training, and community outreach, continue to empower individuals and families in Obowo, equipping them with skills and resources for sustainable livelihoods.
The event attracted a crowd of over 5,000, including traditional rulers, Catholic priests, men, women, and youths from across the Local Government Area.
The grand finale was a memorable occasion, underscoring the power of sports to unite communities and drive meaningful social change.
