Resist drug abuse while celebrating Christmas, Imo Govt urges youths

The Imo Government has urged the state’s youths to avoid the tendency to abuse drugs and other substances while celebrating Christmas.

This is contained in a statement by Gov. Hope Uzodinma’s Special Adviser on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, made available to newsmen in Owerri, on Wednesday.

Our correspondent reports that Obonna who hitherto served in the same capacity was reappointed by the Governor on Monday Dec. 23, 2024.

The governor, in a notice of reappointment signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, described Obonna as “ a proven asset in the war against drug abuse “.

Obonna urged Imo youths and all residents of the state alike to prioritise their health, safety and the well-being of those around them, by staying away from illicit drugs and avoiding situations that may lead to substance abuse.

He said that drug abuse and trafficking pose significant threats to individuals, families and communities.

He therefore advised Imo residents to focus on spending quality time with loved ones, practicing self-care and self love, engaging in drug-free activities and reflecting on their goals and aspirations.

“ Let's spread love, kindness and awareness against illicit drugs use and trafficking instead.

“ Together, let's build a safer, healthier and more compassionate world.

“ Remember, a healthy and happy you is the best gift to yourself and those around you, so stay safe, stay sober and have a wonderful Christmas “, he said.
