The Nigerian Correctional Service, Imo State Command, has addressed allegations made by an online media outlet concerning the construction of a perimeter fence at the Owerri Custodial Centre. The claims, which reportedly stem from grievances raised by the Catholic Church, have been described as unfounded and malicious by the Command.
In a press release signed by CSC Uboegbulam Goodluck, the Command's Public Relations Officer, it was clarified that the church in question, Saint Lazarus Catholic Chaplaincy, was originally established within the Custodial Centre and is now situated on the facility’s buffer zone in line with its original purpose.
The statement recounted the events of April 5, 2021, when the custodial facility was attacked by hoodlums, prompting the Federal Government to initiate the perimeter fencing project to bolster security. The Command emphasized that this initiative is critical for safeguarding the facility, preventing further attacks, and ensuring public safety.
“The church and the entire community should view this project as a necessary security measure rather than a point of contention,” the release stated. It further highlighted the government's commitment to public and national security, urging the community to express gratitude for such proactive measures.
Refuting claims that the Command sought to undermine the chaplaincy, the release reiterated that Saint Lazarus Catholic Chaplaincy remains a significant stakeholder in the correctional system’s mandate of reform, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.
The Command urged the public to disregard the report, describing it as an attempt to tarnish the Service’s reputation. It also called for continued public support in its mission to secure correctional facilities and promote effective rehabilitation of inmates.
The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirmed its dedication to fostering safety and reform, appealing to community leaders, faith-based organizations, and stakeholders to collaborate in achieving these objectives.
