Hardship: Don’t Join Protests, FCT Police Begs Abuja Residents

As the date for the proposed protest against economic hardship in the country approaches, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Benneth Igweh, has urged Abuja residents not to join the protest.

He emphasized the importance of preserving the new infrastructure recently developed by the FCT administration and President Bola Tinubu.

During a press briefing, CP Igweh also paraded the mastermind behind the armed robbery gang responsible for the murder of retired Brigadier General Uwen Harold Udokwerre on June 22, 2024.

The suspect, Alhaji Ashiru, was arrested in Kano while attempting to flee the country. Ashiru, previously jailed for crimes and escaped during a jailbreak, was found in possession of the general’s gun, wristwatch, and his wife’s jewelry.

Speaking on the proposed strike, CP Igweh stated, "Lions do not destroy their den. We have toiled so much to ensure and provide security for the FCT.

In this process, we have lost officers. Last week we lost two officers, the previous week, we lost one officer. We don’t want to lose any more."

He added, "Please don’t allow the destruction of what the minister and Mr. President are doing. We have been in this FCT; we know when there are changes—roads, infrastructure. I am pleading with residents, do not join this protest."

CP Igweh warned that miscreants might infiltrate the protest and cause significant damage, leading to a regression in the progress made in the FCT. He urged residents to act maturely and appreciate the efforts made to ensure their safety.

Regarding the arrest of the mastermind, CP Igweh revealed that Ashiru coordinated the robbery from a hotel near the general’s estate and that drugs were recovered from his residence.

In addition to Ashiru, the police also arrested another armed robbery and kidnapping group, including Ibrahim Yakubu, Ugumonde Joseph, and Moktab Lahi.

They were caught with two pistols and several rounds of ammunition while planning a robbery in the FCT.

The police also displayed a truck loaded with stolen materials, including cables and wires from government institutions, recovered from the suspects.

CP Igweh reassured the public of the police’s commitment to maintaining security and urged residents to support their efforts by not participating in the planned protest.
