NERC Grants Imo State Control Over Electricity Market

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Imo State to the Imo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ISERC), effective July 1, 2024.

This decision aligns with the Electricity Act 2023 and follows the state's compliance with the act's provisions.

NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba signed the order, stating that Imo's government requested and received approval for this transfer.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is directed to create a subsidiary, EEDC SubCo, to manage intrastate electricity distribution within Imo.

This subsidiary must be incorporated within 60 days and obtain a license from ISERC. Imo is now the fourth state to gain such regulatory authority, joining Enugu, Ondo, and Ekiti.
