Use social media to promote national interests, NYSC D-G urges youth corps members in Imo

Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has advised  corps members in Imo to promote national unity through the use of social media.

The D-G gave the advice while declaring open the orientation course for the Batch C Stream I corps members deployed to Imo at the permanent orientation camp, Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state.

Ibrahim who was represented by the Imo NYSC coordinator, Mr Jimba Chris said that in line with the purpose of the scheme, all corps members were expected to unite the country rather than tear it apart.

He harped on the need to promote national values through the use of social media rather than  rumour peddling and hate speech.

" We must use the social media to promote Nigeria's unity because it is the most prominent means of information spread among today's youth.

" Hate speech and rumour peddling must be jettisoned by corps members and the social must be used as a tool for positive purposes in the interest of national cohesion" , he said.

He however expressed his profound appreciation to the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 and the Nigeria Center for Disease Control for their support in  protecting NYSC officials and corps members  against the pandemic.

He urged corps members to continously observe COVID-19 protocols such as face masking, regular hand washing and use of sanitizers throughout the orientation period.

He also encouraged the corps members to  fully participate in the ongoing Skills Aquisition and Entrepreneurship Development training in the camp adding that this would go a long way in enhancing their capacity.

A highpoint of the event was the administration of the national pledge and the oath of allegiance on the new corps members by the Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Theresa Chikeka, represented by a colleague, Justice E. N. Eke.
