A non-governmental organisation, Re-educating Africans on the Risk and Dangers in Unplanned Journey Abroad (RARDUJA) has cautioned Nigerians especially the youths on the risks of illegal migration and unplanned journey abroad.

This was as the group disclosed that, "this year alone (2020), no fewer than 900 immigrants lost their lives in attempt to enter Europe through illegal means according to the report from the International Organization for Migration; while over 11,000 others were arrested, detained, abused, exploited and subjected to trafficking."

In a press conference held at NUJ Secretariat in Owerri yesterday, with scores of critical stakeholders in Imo State present, Eddy Duru, RARDUJA Coordinator highlighted dangers inherent in unplanned journey abroad cum illegal migration.

According to him, "74 migrants died on the 12th of November, 2020 while crossing through the sea to Europe. Majority of these immigrants are the youths, between the age of 18 to 40. We understand that there is hardship in the land but it is not enough reason for one to risk his life."

Duru, who is also a Councillor Representing Foreigners in Kassel State, Germany urged journalists and other stakeholders in the state to partner through constant sensitization.

He said, "we should endeavor to support efforts aimed at enlightening our people, "not to be desperate but diligent about everything in life; especially when it concerns seeking greener pastures abroad."

“Our quest is to continue to re-educate our people, Nigerians on the risks associated with this unplanned travelling to Europe through the sea, the desert and even through the air. Many who are there right now are frustrated .

"RARDUJA is not against anybody travelling abroad but one should follow due process to avoid the risk of losing his life in the course of that.

"We are also telling our youths because they are mainly the victims, never to travel anywhere in the world without having the right information about the place."
